It is impressive to hear that seven of your goals have come into life. Hopefully, I will be as successful as you. Still two years to go.

Re: Professional Bucket List

Good Luck to you Honza, you have honorable goals.

An explosive event created the urge to create a bucket list circa 1993. I was about 100 feet form the terrorist bomb in the World Trade Center in 1993. It brought thoughts of all the dreams I had when young, but never pursued.

One of the highest priorities was to complete my higher education. Now i have an MA. There may be a Ph.D. in the future.

I wanted to be a published science fiction author. I recently completed my first novel, Elevator 37, and now must go through the query process to find an agent.

At this point, seven down, three to go.

I hope you fare well.

Mindset is the key and without it, there are only problems. The way you think about your future job determines your performance at the interview. If you don't believe in yourself enough, you will crash and burn. If you do, chances of success are rising sky high.

Re: Switching Jobs? This was said by Winston Churchill and I proved it myself, it really helps to get you from frustration and misery of failures, not only in job hunting:

Courage is going from failure to failure without lost of enthusiasm.

Good luck and keep going

Re: Amazon Kindle – Marketing Success

There is a good point I missed because I don't have the iPhone app (or an iPhone for that matter) - synchronisation across the platforms.

It's true that sampling chapters is a very good move too. Let's say you download seven sample chapters and like three of them. In the end, you will buy three books. Compared to conventional e-shopping (read the reviews, think about the price, browse around for alternatives, make a decision), this works much better and induces the customer to consume more. This logic is awesome!

Re: Amazon Kindle – Marketing Success

I love my Kindle. I read loads more now than I used to and I love being able to keep synchronised between my actual Kindle and the Kindle app on my iPhone. It means I can read anywhere, anytime. Also, the ability to download a free sample chapter has meant that I am prepared to take a bigger risk on books than I would if I had to buy the whole thing. This is the big marketing innovation with the Kindle, and everyone seems to have overlooked it by focusing on the technology.

Re: Bad Pitch: Pepsi Reaches Out to Bloggers

Precisely. Seth Godin has some interesting ideas but when it comes to storytelling, there are more interesting authors. More information on that coming up. :-)

Re: Storytelling Matters: Google Search Stories

I agree, Honza, too many marketers (and I include P.R. as part of marketing) forget the power of stories; as so often, Seth Godin, recognises this -- it's the topic of his (mis-titled, as he recently agreed) book, "All Marketers Are Liars", he meant storytellers! Well worth reading if you're unfamiliar with the concept.

Re: Why Are Graduates Unemployed?

Even though the evidence is only anecdotal, I am happy for it. Every subtle sign of recovery is a good news. The difference between the U.K. and Czech Republic seems to manifest itself. There is a different reality in the CEE region - the grads fight for decent positions and a lot of them is leaving the field. The year 2010 should turn the tide and stabilize the situation so it looks like in Britain. Let's hope...

I guess you are right because regardless of how valuable we deem the skill sets necessary for working in online space, social media is still about people behind that technology. That's where the intercultural communication skills kick in.

Indeed I would. I will e-mail you tomorrow with some topics to consider. :-)

Re: Why Are Graduates Unemployed?

This is anecdotal, but I'm still hearing from more employers seeking good graduate recruits than I am from graduates desperate to get a step on the PR career ladder.

I'm aware that most of the opportunities are in the digital/social media space - but there's also demand for students with an international perspective (language skills, cultural experience). You would appear to be well placed on both these counts.

It's an important topic and I'd welcome an article on this for Behind the Spin (www.behindthespin.com). Would you like to research and write something for me (rbailey@pobox.com)?

Re: Happy New Year 2010!

Chris, my best wishes to you as well! I am very happy that you will follow my posts relating to hands-on approach to PR. In case you would like to create some customised content about PR for your class, feel free to ask me.

As for the linguistic issue, I am fairly comfortable with using both forms as long as we understand each other.

The only flaw I see in relation to the matrix is its timeliness - it seems a bit outdated. By now, the New Media is not a standalone discipline anymore, for it has blended into other aspects of the matrix. Some companies on the Czech market are starting to realise it but for most, it's just a vision of distant future.

Re: Happy New Year 2010!

The MarCom Matrix comprises six major forms of MarCom:

Advertising
Public Relations (PR) & Publicity
Sales Promotion
Direct Marketing (DM)
Event Marketing
New Media (which includes the Internet).

They all revolve around the “Idea”. What’s the Idea?
It could be the idea of the brand, the idea around a current campaign, or a short-term event like a product intro.

As I'm going to be teaching Marketing Communications at the new Tiffin University, Prague, from January, I'll be reading your posts on the subject with interest. Incidentally, some people call it Marketing Communication, some Marketing Communications. I prefer the later as the plural form, rightly, IMHO, implies that it covers multiple disciplines. Most sources, though, agree that to be truly effective MarCom (or shouldn't it be MarComs?) should be part of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) of which PR is but a small (if much overlooked and under-appreciated b y most marketers) part. Your thoughts? 8-)

Re: How to Structure a Cover Letter

Wow!! I appreciate the link.

In addition to Q10 and Darkroom/JDarkRoom, there's also Write Monkey, which is a nice amalgam of the two. It has a lot of features of both of these tools, such as sounds like Q10, choice of fonts, and a window-view option (as opposed to full-screen only) like Darkroom. I think it's the best of all worlds, and offers some very useful features.
